Dear steam friend
Welcome to my collection of pictures of steam locomotives from the mid 70ties of various European countries. I had the joy to travel around in Europe to watch some of the last steam locomotives as they gradually were dying out.
I started out the steam hunt with East Germany because I had read an article about the narrow gauge lines around Dresden and the article was almost sure the lines were going to close down very soon. It was 1975, I was 16 years old and I asked my parents if I could go on a trip to Dresden. I do not exactly remember my parent’s reaction but I am sure they were terrified. East Germany – You would be put in jail. Well I was resistant so at last they promised I could go if I found someone to join me – They were obviously sure that would be impossible! Some days later they had to bite the bullet because I actually found a class mate who was willing to join me. A word is a word even for parents, so off we went to Dresden that summer.
This trip was my first experience with real live steam. Thereafter every school holiday it was off to new steam hunting before it was too late.
When my passion for steam locomotives started I was not aware that I had chosen a hobby which was going to die out. I hope you will enjoy a tour down the nostalgic lane with me. If some of the pictures recall pleasant memories of places you have been, or for the younger generations the real steam traction can make an impression, I think I have succeeded.
Best regards

My name is Steen Larsen. I am a Dane now living in Brazil. My interest for live steam goes back to when I was a teenager. I missed the regular Danish steam locomotives service with a couple of years, but I found out that out there in Europe there was still plenty of real live steam to find.
By the middle of the 1980ties work and family finally caught up with me. It was also becoming very scarce with steam out there in Europe. Later my work took me to the US and now I am settled in Brazil. But I must say that amongst the most pleasent memories I recall, is sitting next to a railway track somewhere in Europe waiting for the next steam train to pass by.
